1959 Lancia Appia Zagato GTE -SOLD
This is one of about 700 Zagato bodied Lancia Appias produced from 1956 to 1963. Five versions of these lightweight, aerodynamic cars were produced including the prototype, Zagato GT, GTZ, GTE (Series One and Series Two) and Sport. It is One of about 300 Zagato GTEs, one of about 160 Series One GTEs, and one of 31 GTEs built on the Series 2 Appia chassis (with 136 built on the Series 3 Appia chassis). Built in early 1959, the Series One GTEs were built with plexiglass headlight covers before lighting regulations changed, disallowing covered headlights, and forcing Zagato to change to uncovered lights with the Series Two GTE.
This example was one of the first batch of 5 that were imported by Max Hoffman into the US.
The early history of this car is unknown, but it was purchased by American gentleman racing driver Anatoly Arutunoff in the early 70s and actively campaigned in vintage racing for much of the last 50 years. It was repainted in its original colour, and has had an engine rebuild, but is in otherwise original condition.
Apart from the addition of seat belts, this Zagato is completely original. The body and undercarriage are straight, and free of any material corrosion. Mechanically the car is in excellent condition. It can be enjoyed and appreciated as a preservation car, or it would make the basis for an easy restoration.
The car comes with period racing log books, the factory Lancia owners manual and parts manual, as well as the original steering wheel.
It was previously sold on Bring A Trailer here...
