1979 Mercedes-Benz 450SL | PCARMARKET
The Mercedes-Benz 450SL, a part of the R107 series, is well-regarded for its blend of performance, comfort, and timeless design. Powered by a 4.5-liter V8 engine paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission, this 1979 example is finished in Astral Silver over a Blue MB Tex interior. It features a body-color removable hardtop, fog lights, 14″ Bundt alloy wheels, automatic climate control, electric windows, central locking, and a Becker AM/FM/cassette stereo. Showing under 80k kilometers or approximately 50k miles on the odometer, this R107 450SL is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Canada.

History This R107 450 SL was purchased at the Mercedes Benz Canada dealer in Toronto (Eglington Ave.) to a Halifax NS resident, and stayed in Halifax with the first owner until 2015 where it appears to have been sold to a Halifax dealer and then to the 3rd owner and shipped to Calgary, AB in 2020.

The vehicle accumulated about 70,000 of its 79,000 miles up until about 1990, and then was stored or sparadically used since then, accumulating only 9,000 km in the last 30 years.   The maintenance book shows service records up to 2010 with annual services, despite the car travelling only a few hundred km in the interim.

Since coming to Alberta the car has been serviced at local Calgary Independent European service shops including Reigal Tuning and Continental Auto Service.  In addition to regular oil changes this Mercedes received a new water pump, thermostat, fuel pump, fuel filter, rear brake calliper and steering and suspension work, totalling more than $4,000.

The vehicle was undercoated before its first winter in September 1979 and a thick coat of undercoat was sprayed on the undercarriage and sides of the engine bay. It was then sprayed with a layer of oil, which was likely re-applied periodically. The undercarriage has since been degreased though the undercoat remains. The undercoat and oil have prevented any corrosion on the undercarriage.

The body panels are all original to the vehicle and it has factory paint depth of approximately 150mm +/- 50mm on all panels indicating the original Astral Silver (DB725) paint, no bodywork, and we can infer no accidents. The paint shows remarkably well for a 45 year old vehicle, with a bright shine, an only a couple minor blemishes where the hardtop meets the bodywork. The doors shut with the typical Mercedes-Benz precision and the door windows seal against the intact weatherstripping.

The windscreen appears original with Mercedes-Benz markings, and an unscratched surround. Weather strips and seals remain intact and soft.  Chrome shows uniform very light scratching.  All lights and glass is clear and  untracked.  Plastic light lenses are unfaded.

The dark blue interior is entirely original with an uncracked dash pad, dark Zebrano wood with no discolouration or cracking of its lacquer finish.  The MB Tex seats show no wear, along with the carpets. The soft top is new with no clouding, splits or noticeable scratches of the plastic windows.  The mechanisms to open and close the soft top and the hardtop work perfectly. The car retains its original Becker Mexico Stereo/Tape deck which still works.

The 14” Bundt alloy wheels wear older Bridgestone tires in the correct 205-70-14 size.  The painted silver finish is showing signs of wear, though there is no curb rash.  The spare tire looks unused and wears the original Michelin XVS tire. The spare tire well shows evidence rustproofing, protecting the perfectly preserved sheet metal underneath.  The jack is in place, but the car lost its original tool roll.

Included with the car are the matching hard top, car cover, complete set of books and clear owners pouch, two keys and a car cover.

This 450SL can be described as ‘Collector Grade’ with its low mileage, original paint and its outstanding well-preserved condition.
