This Mercedes-Benz was sold new into Mississauga, Ontario then spent some time in the US, before being imported back to Canada. It was traded in on a Cadillac at Don Wheaton Chevrolet-Cadillac in 2020, after which it was sold to its current Calgary resident. It currently shows 112,700km on the odometer, which is consistent with the overall condition of the vehicle.
All 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SLs have dual row timing chains, which are much stronger than the single row versions that have been known to fail, and are a concern for buyers looking for earlier 380 SLs.
The car is stock apart from the upgrade to MB 560SL wheels which would have been introduced the following year, and which were a popular upgrade. Dealer installed items also include the chrome fender lips, and undercoating.
The car has benefited from a quality repaint in its original Signal Red, and has consistent paint depth which indicates no excess filler in any of the body panels. There is no noticeable orange peel or masking lines. The CARFAX report does not indicate any collision history, and the undercarriage is clean and corrosion free. The soft top looks barely used, and the rear window is clear and un-cracked. A hard top winch is included with the sale.
The interior is beige with the incredibly hard-wearing MB-Tex seat coverings. Carpets, including the trunk, are unsoiled, and still have their original factory rubber backing which has not deteriorated. Floor pans are factory fresh indicating that the car has had no water ingress. The Burr Walnut trim is still dark and not sun damaged, with no cracking. It appears that the dash pad has been replaced at some point in the vehicles history and is unmarked. All electrical equipment, gauges and controls work correctly. The AC blows cold, as the compressor and associated AC components were recently replaced with a conversion to R134a refrigerant.
The car has benefitted from approximatley $17,500 worth of maintenance from Lone Star Mercedes-Benz and Continental Auto Service. Major items include the replacement of front suspension components, a retrofit of the Air Conditioning to R134a refrigerant, MB remanufactured steering box ($6,600), gearbox reseal, and replacement of the engine rear main seal. The engine has been given a cosmetic 'dress up' kit consisting of aluminum and coloured sleeves and sheaths for various hoses and parts of the wiring loom.
The maintenance records from 2020 to present are included in a folder which accompanies the car. Tools and jack are present. The original owners pouch with service and maintenance books are present, as are the two wrenches for removing the hard top and lowering the canvas top.
This vehicle has been completely reconditioned mechanically and cosmetically. It is ready for the next custodian to enjoy. Contact Lawrence Romanosky for details.
