The Maserati M138 Coupes and Spiders were the beginning of a renaissance at Maserati. With stying from Pininfarina and technical assistance and components from Ferrari, and considerable investment from the FIAT group, Maserati became more than a niche manufacturer and started selling cars in the thousands instead of hundreds. The dealer network was greatly expanded and mostly shared with Ferrari, both brands being sold under the same roof in most locations.
Ferrari donated the basic mechanical components, though they were heavily reworked for application in a grand touring car, rather than a high-strung sports car. The Ferrari 4.3L quad-cam V8 engine was given a new crankshaft with a conventional crank throws and firing order (not the flat-plane crank of the F430) and a wet sump. Though detuned from 490hp to 380hp, the engine gained more low end torque and low speed tractability.
The Ferrari F1 automated manual gearbox was reworked by Maserati for smoothness and durability and re-named Cambiocorsa. A Maserati specific OBD code reader is included with this car and it reports 75% life left in the clutch.
The current owner purchased a new Cambiocorsa ‘F1’ gearbox pump to put on the shelf in case it was ever needed (it does not at present), and this is included with the car.
The suspension is made up of aluminum double wishbones on each corner with ’Skyhook’ programmed adjustable dampers. Formula Dynamics Wheels are 19” in diameter and wear 235-30-19 and 295-30-19 Genesis tires with more than 50% tread depth remaining. Brakes use 2 piece, radially vented and cross drilled rotors with red dual piston callipers. The rotors show minimal wear. A Larini Exhaust is installed.
The car was purchased on Bring A Trailer in 2022 for $USD 19,500 and imported into Canada. The current owner has replaced the starter motor, changed the oil, hollowed out the catalytic converters and wrapped the exhaust with heat insulating tape.
Cosmetically, the car has been treated to paint correction and polish. The interior of this Maserati Grandsport is a combination of black leather and technical fabric. Originally silver, the fabric on the door panels and dash has been dyed black.
