The Telsa Model 3 is one of the most significant automobiles ever produced -possibly only the Ford Model T was more impactful in the way it changed the automobile industry. The Model 3 is the car that brought Electric Vehicles to the mainstream as a commercially viable product and kick started the entire global EV transition.
Tesla started producing automobiles in 2008 with their Lotus-derived 2 seat roadster which they made about 2,450 copies of. This was followed by the introduction of the Model S in 2012 and the Model X SUV in 2015. The Model 3 was introduced in 2017 and within a week it had received 325,000 paid reservations. By 2021 had the distinction of being the first electric car to sell over 1M units.
The Model 3 can be ordered with one or two electric motors and battery packs of different sizes and battery compositions. In 2019 there were 5 different versions of the Model 3: Standard Range, Standard Range Plus, Long Range, Long Range Dual Motor AWD and Performance Long Range Dual Motor. MSRP started at $45,000 and increased to a little over $80,000 for the Performance. In 2024 the range is simplified with a Base ($50,000), Long Range ($60,000) and Performance ($70,000). These prices are before options and transport.
The Performance variant gives you more powerful electric motors on both front and rear axles producing approximately 475hp combined, as well as a battery pack with greater energy density. Acceleration is better than most super sports cars with 0-100km/hr taking just over 3 seconds. The suspension was upgraded, along with brakes which have red painted callipers. The 20" wheels are shod with 235-35-20 performance rubber (Michelin Pilot Sport 4S). The Model 3 performance also has a carbon fiber rear spoiler to reduce lift at high speeds.
This 2019 Model 3 Performance had an MSRP of $85,600 to which the original owner added a 2nd set of 20" wheels and winter Michelin Pilot Alpins in the same size of 235-35-20. Options included the Multi Stage Red paint and white/black interior. With GST this car's total cost was approximately $95,000.
It has covered just under 47,000km from new as of Oct 1, 2024.
This Tesla was executive driven, always garaged, and almost exclusively charged from home with a Tesla Level 2 240V home charger. It was always charged to the 80% SOC recommended by Tesla. This car has performed flawlessly from new and has never needed any warranty work. The only items that needed replacement were the tires and cabin filters.
Apart from some minor touched up stone chips and minor pits in the windscreen, the cars shows as new. It is impossible to reasonably fault for the year and mileage.
*NCA batteries are made with both cobalt and nickel which give it very high energy density. NCA batteries should not be charged above 90% for most daily uses since they are naturally less stable at high (or low) states of charge and are more sensitive to degradation in these states. Currently, Tesla’s NCA batteries are produced by Panasonic at the Nevada gigafactory and by LG Chem in China.
